Pillow Inserts—I've tried a few

Looking for the perfect pillow insert?

Inserts can make or break your throw pillow. A good quality insert can pair with your pillow cover to achieve the perfect look and will quickly become a statement piece. Inserts are an important purchase to go along with your DABU pillow covers. While we don't sell our covers with inserts included, there are many options already available in the market. We have done our fare share of scouting to find the best ones available, so here are some suggestions and some of our favorites.

First consider the type of insert you want. There are two types: down and down alternative. We suggest down for the best look. You can give your pillow a good chop and it will hold up well. We aren't fans of down alternative because—hello polyester—not good for the environment, but we understand some people are allergic to down feathers.
Side note: We recommend using an insert that is 2" bigger than your pillow cover in order to get the fullest look. We find that pillows look less flat and more cozy this way.
As an example, look at the pillow on the left vs. the right. The left has an insert that is 2" bigger than the cover. The right is paired with an insert that is the same size as the cover. It makes a difference, right?

Repurpose

For our fellow sustainable friends, first take a look around your house. You may not need to order an insert! Most throw pillows have a zipper or fold and if you aren't using it, just switch out the cover! It is the perfect way to give your home a little spring refresh, without having to buy more. If it's a little flat, try giving it a good fluff or put it in the dryer on low for a couple minutes to give it some new life.

Thrift it! As a thrifter myself, this is the route I have taken. Before you write it off as gross, you can clean the inserts pretty well. At my local thrift stores, overstock from Target comes regularly. These are fresh, new throw pillows that have never been used, but even gently used inserts work just as well. I take them home, take off the covers, and throw them in the washer on a gentle cycle, and then you can let them air dry or put them in the dryer for a few minutes. This will clean them well and then you can put your new DABU pillow covers on and you are ready to go! High five for sustainability!

Local

Check out your local home goods stores. We love supporting other small businesses, so check there first. Grab a coffee, and shop around town! This is a fun way to look for your inserts. If there aren't any smaller home goods stores in your town, most bigger stores will cary inserts.

Online

There are some great options online. One of our favorites is West Elm. This is the one we suggest in our shop! They have both types of inserts in a wide range of sizes. Pottery Barn is another classic and they have both down and down alternative. For those who frequent Target, here are some good options of both types of inserts.
One of our favorites for interior inspiration, Chris Loves Julia, did a round up and review of Amazon's top 5 pillow inserts. They tried out each insert and gave their review on quality and price point. Check out the results here!

Whichever insert you choose, we hope you love your DABU pillows! They are a work of art made by many hands. We hope you feel a sense of community from us, the community who made them.

Bye for now!

Elizabeth
